Vestibular rehabilitation is a set of therapies and exercises designed to treat balance disorders and dizziness caused by issues in the vestibular system, located in the inner ear. Problems such as vertigo, recurring dizziness, or a feeling of instability can seriously affect daily life, but with a specialized approach, it is possible to regain confidence and stability.

What is the vestibular system?

The vestibular system is located in the inner ear and is responsible for maintaining balance and spatial orientation. When it is disrupted by injuries, infections, pressure changes, or aging, the body perceives nonexistent movements, causing dizziness, vertigo, and imbalance.

Problems vestibular rehabilitation can treat

Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV): sudden dizziness when moving the head, especially when turning or lying down.

Chronic dizziness or instability: constant feeling of imbalance that makes walking or daily activities difficult.

Vestibular imbalance syndrome: loss of coordination and spatial orientation problems.

Post-traumatic or post-surgical recovery: after inner ear or central nervous system injuries or surgeries.

Examples of vestibular rehabilitation exercises

Repositioning exercises (Epley and Semont): move the semicircular canals to relieve vertigo.

Habituation exercises: repeat movements that trigger dizziness so the brain can adapt and reduce sensitivity.

Balance and coordination exercises: strengthen posture and improve stability when walking or performing physical activities.

Visual-vestibular training: improves the ability to keep the eyes fixed while moving the head.

Benefits of consulting a specialist

Reduction of dizziness and vertigo through exercises tailored to each person.

Improved balance and coordination for safer movement.

Fall prevention, especially for older adults or those with reduced mobility.

Enhanced quality of life by regaining confidence and autonomy.

At Fisiolistic, our physiotherapists specialized in vestibular rehabilitation conduct a personalized assessment and create a treatment plan tailored to each patient, combining practical exercises, advanced techniques, and continuous monitoring to ensure effective results.

✨ Don’t ignore dizziness or a feeling of instability
If you experience vertigo, frequent dizziness, or difficulty maintaining balance, vestibular rehabilitation can make a real difference. Book your consultation at Fisiolistic and restore your overall wellbeing today.

The post Vestibular Rehabilitation: How to Restore Your Balance and Say Goodbye to Dizziness first appeared on Fisiolistic.

Do you suffer from asthma, bronchitis, allergies, or a chronic lung disease and are looking for natural and effective ways to improve your breathing?
Respiratory physiotherapy can be a key tool to restore well-being, relieve symptoms, and prevent complications.

In this article, we’ll explain what respiratory physiotherapy is, who it is for, what techniques are used, and how it can help you in your daily life.

What is Respiratory Physiotherapy?

Respiratory physiotherapy is a specialized field within physiotherapy focused on improving lung function, facilitating mucus clearance, increasing lung capacity, and enhancing the quality of life for individuals with respiratory conditions.

It’s a science-based discipline that does not replace medical treatments, but rather complements them effectively.

Who Is It For?

This type of physiotherapy can benefit people with:

Acute respiratory conditions, such as bronchitis, rhinitis, nasal congestion, or respiratory allergies.

Chronic respiratory diseases, such as COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease), asthma, pulmonary hypertension, or cystic fibrosis.

Certain cases of sleep apnea.

Elderly individuals or people with reduced mobility who have lost lung capacity.

Athletes looking to optimize their breathing.

What Are the Benefits?

Some of the most common benefits of respiratory physiotherapy include:

Improved breathing pattern.

Reduced shortness of breath or dyspnea.

Decreased productive cough and nasal congestion.

Increased lung volume and oxygenation.

Prevention of recurrent respiratory infections.

Better physical endurance and improved sleep quality.

Techniques Used

Several techniques may be applied depending on the patient’s specific needs:

🌀 Ultrasonic Nebulization

The use of ultrasonic nebulizers allows the vapor to reach even the smallest bronchioles, helping to loosen and eliminate mucus.

👃 Nasal Hygiene

Proper nasal cleansing is essential for healthy breathing. Custom protocols are taught, suitable for both adults and children.

🧘 Breathing Exercises

Exercises may include:

The Buteyko Method to control breathing rhythm.

Lung volume expansion techniques.

Strengthening of respiratory muscles.

💨 Bronchial Drainage Guided by Auscultation

Using modern and personalized techniques such as modulation of expiratory flow and positive expiratory pressure (PEP) devices.

🏋️‍♂️ Physical Re-education and Respiratory Gymnastics

Gentle training to improve endurance and exercise tolerance in patients with respiratory limitations.

💆 Myofascial Therapy

Manual therapy on inspiratory muscles and respiratory structures to relieve tension and enhance chest mobility.

Conclusion

Respiratory physiotherapy not only treats diseases, but it also teaches you how to breathe better, improves your quality of life, and helps prevent complications.
If you’re living with a respiratory issue or want to learn more, getting informed is the first step toward breathing better.

Psychoneuroendocrinoimmunology (PNIE) is a holistic science that analyses all the systems of the human body.

This means that the entire human body is interrelated and that, for example, a person with emotional stress may develop muscle pain as a consequence (these pains are called psychosomatic pains).

Psychosomatic pain is already well known by the population but there are others interrelationships that are not so evident, for example the relationship that our intestine has with our state of mind, with inflammatory pains and with autoimmune diseases.

So, if a person has cervical pain for example, where can this pain come from? The healthcare professional has to assess it. But often the cause will be multifactorial (i.e. the majority of the pains have more than one cause).

In what order do I have to treat the different systems? First the musculoskeletal dysfunction or the endocrine or the psychological aspect….? Often, it’s appropriate to alternate different treatments. So, one day you can visit the physiotherapist, the next day the PNIE specialist (who will modify your diet) and the next day go to the psychologist…

The specialist in PNIE will use the scientific evidence, together with your analysis and clinical tests, to prescribe some dietary indications (or supplements) in order to correct dysfunctions of your endocrine and immune system.

Nowadays, a lot of diets have become popular, many of them are good but “hell is full of the best intentions”, this means that, is it that all diets go well for everyone? When is it necessary to stop them?

The most responsible action is that an expert supervises the diet, its effects and to modify if it’s necessary.

In the world of physiotherapy, many tools have been developed to treat people but they are useless if the person continues with a high level of inflammation due to an inadequate diet or the level of stress is high and constant.

A good physiotherapy treatment must include a good referral to another professional when necessary. Health professionals must also be interrelated!

Taking care of yourself is an exciting adventure, which sometimes requires patience, creativity, effort … do not be discouraged because health professionals will help you on this journey.

The post Psychoneuroendocrineimmunology first appeared on Fisiolistic.

Paediatric physiotherapy does not mean general physiotherapy applied to children because children have specific characteristics, such as:

1- Learning difficulties in children can be defined as bodily neurodevelopmental disorders.

Children who suffer from learning difficulties, usually also have problems with balance, lack of coordination, poor proprioception, sensory disturbances and low muscle tone, so that the construction of the nervous system was not optimal.

Treatment aimed at reprogramming and improving the sensory and motor bases of the child has immediate effects on their functioning at school, in addition to the necessary pedagogical adaptations to improve their performance.

2- Slight problems must also be treated.

Serious neurodevelopmental problems, such as cerebral palsy, are easy to diagnose and treat. On the other hand, slight problems of the central nervous system are frequently misinterpreted by professionals and by parents. Sometimes it is thought that the children will overcome all their “delays” spontaneously, but this is not true and in certain cases accumulates even more delay. The problem is also often attributed to aspects of personal identity: “He is like that, a little clumsy.” But unfortunately, it is known that developmental immaturity in babies gives a very high probability of having attention, learning and behavioural difficulties in children.

3- Not all stimulation exercises for the neurological development are relevant.

The physiotherapist always includes the family with stimulation protocols, in addition to the more specialized physiotherapy sessions, where there are aspects that are more complex. It is necessary daily stimulation.

Not because an exercise is healthy is relevant for the nervous system at a certain stage. For example, swimming is an excellent physical exercise, but it is probably ineffective for a child who has trouble walking down stairs or who cannot ride a bike without. Likewise, exercises with fine motor hands may not deliver results if the neck is stiff.

It is the responsibility of the paediatric physiotherapist to know the best exercises in each case.
